💡 FOCUS OF THE DAY - Secret #5: Trade The Theme Not The Ticker

Tomorrow, Alphabet and Tesla report earnings, and traders are already picking sides. But that's often the wrong question. Trade the theme, not the ticker. Instead of betting on who has the better quarter, focus on what's true either way: AI infrastructure spending continues to drive demand across chips, power, networking, and cloud computing. The best trade isn't always the company making headlines—it's the trend behind them.

TL;DR: Don't bet on one earnings report. Own the trend that's bigger than any single company.

This is Secret #5 of the 10 BullBuzz Secrets to Success. Find all 10 at the bottom of today's issue.

🌡️ Volatility Watch

VIX: $17.55 (-1.10)

Stress Meter: 🟢 LOW

BullBuzz Read: The VIX dropped sharply back below 18, signaling investors are growing more comfortable with risk ahead of a busy stretch of earnings. Low volatility doesn't guarantee smooth markets—it simply means expectations are calm. Stay focused on the bigger themes and let price action, not headlines, guide your trades.

📊 Market Snapshot

TL;DR: Broad risk-on rally this morning with stocks, commodities, and crypto all in the green, led by gold and the Nasdaq.

Heading Into the Open

  • Stocks eased as oil ran: the S&P slipped 0.19% to 7,443, and the Dow fell 0.59% Monday as crude climbed on a ninth straight US strike on Iran.

  • GM opens the gauntlet: General Motors reports before Tuesday's bell, with the Street eyeing about $3.13 EPS and a fresh read on tariffs.

  • The AI-capex verdict lands tomorrow: Alphabet and Tesla both report after tomorrow's close (IBM and AT&T too), the first real test of whether AI spending is paying off.

Bird's Eye: Two tapes at once: an oil premium lifting energy and defense, an AI-capex question pressing chips and Big Tech into the summer's loudest earnings week.

Ground Level: Semis sit about 20% off their highs on fears hyperscalers slow their spend, while energy and defense stayed the green pockets on the Hormuz premium.

Under The Hood: GM reads tariffs and truck demand, but the real swing is Wednesday's Alphabet cloud growth against its $190B capex guide; the Fed waits until July 29.

TL;DR: Don't gamble on one mega-cap's print; trade the AI buildout that all of them are funding.

🎯 Idea of the Day

Arista Networks ($ANET): The Wiring the AI Race Runs On

The market is glued to whose cloud wins this week. Every one of them buys the same network.

Arista builds the high-speed Ethernet switches and software that move data inside the cloud and AI data centers, and its biggest customers are the hyperscalers themselves, Microsoft and Meta among them. Revenue was about $9 billion in 2025, up nearly 29%; the stock has slipped roughly 10% from its July high in the chip shakeout.

Here is the part the earnings bet misses. When any hyperscaler adds GPUs, it has to wire them together, and Arista sells the switching fabric that does so, regardless of which chip or cloud wins. That is the theme (the buildout) captured through a toll booth (the network), not the coin flip (one quarter).

The catch: Arista is high-beta and moves with the chip tape, and its own Q2 lands Aug 4, so keep the stop tight and trim before it.

TL;DR: Arista sells the network every AI cluster needs, whoever wins; own it on a defined-risk dip.

🗓️ What's Ahead

TL;DR: The heaviest earnings week of the summer: GM today, Alphabet and Tesla Wednesday, then the Fed on July 29.

🔥 What's Ripping

$SanDisk $SNDK (+8.02%) — Shares surged after the company announced a new $2.5 billion share repurchase program, boosting confidence in management's outlook and capital return strategy. Coattails: $WDC • $MU • $STX.

United Microelectronics $UMC (+9.46%) — The chipmaker rebounded as bargain hunters stepped back into semiconductor names following last week's broad AI-related selloff. Coattails: $TSM • $ON • $GFS.

💥 What's Wrecking

$Danaher $DHR (-9.54%) — Shares fell after earnings as softer demand in parts of its life sciences business overshadowed an otherwise solid quarter, pressuring the broader diagnostics sector. Coattails: $TMO • $A • $RVTY.

Thermo Fisher Scientific $TMO (-3.31%) — Investors sold the stock in sympathy with Danaher's earnings-driven weakness, weighing on the life sciences tools group. Coattails: $DHR • $ILMN • $MTD.

TL;DR: Oil and defense ripped on the war premium; chips and airlines wrecked on capex fear and fuel costs.

💬 Community Movers

Reddit is fighting the chip rout: real cooling in hyperscaler spend, or the dip to buy? (NVDA, $AMD, $SMH, $MU.) X is locked on the gauntlet, debating whether Alphabet's cloud and Tesla's margins justify the AI-capex bill. ( GOOGL, $TSLA, $MSFT, $META.)

TL;DR: Reddit is arguing the chip dip; X is bracing for the megacap prints.

🔮 Prediction Markets

Will Nvidia be the world's largest company at the end of 2026? Polymarket has climbed back to about 70% YES, up from roughly 54% a month ago, as fears over AI spending have eased. That supports our mid-July view that the odds were too low. Nvidia still holds roughly a $5 trillion valuation with no rival within $1 trillion. The biggest risk remains a meaningful slowdown in AI infrastructure spending—but until that happens, Nvidia remains the clear favorite.

Crowd ~70% YES; U=Our read ~75% (slightly TOO LOW, edge nearly closed)

TL;DR: The crowd caught up to our Nvidia call; the edge is mostly gone now.

(Odds move, and prediction markets aren't legal everywhere, context, not advice.)
