⚡TODAY IN 10 SECONDS

Health care fell 2.52% and dragged the S&P down 0.58% Tuesday, while no other sector moved 1.4%, after Novartis failed a third trial in a week and Amgen lost 10.08% on a drug it does not own.

The trade is IQVIA ($IQV) since they’re paid to run trials whether or not they work.

FOCUS OF THE DAY

Secret #7: Build A Process, Not Predictions

Novartis said Tuesday that del-desiran missed its endpoint in the Phase III HARBOR study in myotonic dystrophy, a third setback in a week after a cardiovascular miss and a cell-therapy pause, and fell 13.93%. The damage spread to companies that ran none of those trials.

Amgen dropped 10.08% because a separate Novartis failure questioned the cholesterol mechanism Amgen is chasing, and Dyne Therapeutics traded down 31% before closing off 16.35% on no news of its own. Nobody could have forecast that readout, and that is the point. A prediction asks which way the data lands. A process asks what the position costs you when a result you cannot see goes wrong, and answers first.

📰 HEADLINES

  • Novartis failed a third trial in a week and took the class down with it. Del-desiran missed its endpoint in myotonic dystrophy after a cardiovascular miss and a cell-therapy pause, and Novartis closed down 13.93% at $137.70. Amgen fell 10.08% to $393.17 on read-through to the same cholesterol approach.

  • Boston Scientific pulled its guidance after a cyberattack. Unauthorized activity found on August 25 caused an outage that disrupted manufacturing and order fulfillment, so it no longer expects to hit third-quarter or full-year sales and adjusted EPS targets. It closed down 5.90%. Stryker fell 8.81% separately, on a peripheral vascular supply shortage now running into the fourth quarter.

  • Brent crossed $100 for the first time since July. CENTCOM destroyed five Iranian crude tankers Tuesday after Iran targeted a US Navy warship, and Iran answered by firing on a base in Jordan. Brent traded near $100.44 and WTI near $94.92 early Wednesday, with Goldman flagging rising odds of $120.

🎯 IDEA OF THE DAY

IQVIA is the largest contract research organization in the world. Drugmakers hire it to design and run their clinical trials, and it sells the datasets the industry plans around. It closed Tuesday at $259.21, down 3.20%, on no company news at all.

A contract research organization is paid on contracted backlog for work performed, not on whether the molecule works. A failed trial costs its sponsor what a successful one does, and the next dollar moves to the next candidate rather than out of the industry. Tuesday punished the label IQVIA carries, not the revenue it books.

The honest risk is that research budgets are not immune forever, and a real biotech funding freeze would hit bookings.

🔔 HEADING INTO THE OPEN

  • Bird's Eye: One sector caused the whole decline. Health care lost 2.52% against the S&P's 0.58%, and none of the other ten fell more than 1.4%. Treat Tuesday as a sector accident, not a macro turn.

  • Ground Level: Five tankers were destroyed, and tanker stocks did not move. International Seaways slipped 0.66%, Scorpio 0.28%, and Teekay 1.11% while crude rose, because the war premium already sits inside them. Fresh money went to refiners, with Valero up 3.27%.

  • Under The Hood: Nothing today but wholesale inventories, then August PPI Thursday at 8:30 AM ET with Oracle and Adobe after the close, and August CPI Friday at 8:30. Brent above $100 feeds that energy line, so a hot headline with a calmer core is the likeliest shape.
