⚡TODAY IN 10 SECONDS

The S&P finished flat, and the Nasdaq set a second straight record, but financials fell 1.97% as traders sold banks, brokers, and insurers they think Meta's Muse agent could replace.

Our idea is Visa ($V), because an AI agent that shops for you still has to pay, and the 9:30 test is whether $XLF holds Tuesday's $54.80 close against $SPY.

FOCUS OF THE DAY

Secret #5: Trade The Theme Not The Ticker

Tuesday's selling had nothing to do with earnings. Meta's Muse agent, which can compare prices, book trips, and complete purchases, recently passed ChatGPT as the most downloaded free iPhone app, and traders turned that into a theme: any business that profits from customers who never shop around is at risk.

Bloomberg called it the "consumer inertia" trade. Schwab fell 6.11%, Allstate 5.50%, JPMorgan 3.42%, and Booking 2.55%, while chipmakers rallied on the same news. The theme is real. The tickers inside it are not all the same. Some companies sit in front of the customer and could get routed around.

Others sit underneath the transaction and get paid no matter who clicks buy. Sort the basket by that question before you sell the whole thing.

📰 HEADLINES

  • An AI app sold the banks. The S&P 500 financials index fell nearly 2% to its lowest close since July, and the bank index dropped 3%, as investors bet AI agents like Meta's Muse will pressure businesses built on customer habit. Reuters also flagged a flattening yield curve, which squeezes what banks earn on deposits.

  • Trump backs a diesel export ban. The president said he would support banning diesel exports, and Treasury Secretary Bessent said the administration is studying whether it can work. With diesel at a record $6.52 a gallon (AAA), Valero fell 4.10% and Marathon 3.16%.

  • Oil fell a fifth day after a three-hour US-Iran meeting. Trump said envoys Witkoff and Kushner had a "very good meeting" with Iran's delegation at the UN, and Brent is holding just under $100 [confirm at send]. Xi Jinping lands in Washington today ahead of Thursday's summit dinner, where trade, rare earths and AI are on the table.

🎯 IDEA OF THE DAY

Visa runs the world's largest card network, earning about $44.5 billion of yearly revenue and $22.4 billion of net income. It lends no money and takes no credit risk. It collects a small fee every time a Visa card is used, paid by the banks that issue and accept its cards.

Tuesday's selloff lumped Visa in with the banks, down 2.14%, but the mechanism runs the other way. An agent that books your hotel or switches your insurance still needs a way to pay, and Visa has been building Intelligent Commerce, which gives AI agents their own payment credentials. Banks fear losing the customer. Visa does not own the customer. It owns the checkout.

If the market decides agents will push payments onto cheaper rails, the fear is right and the floor breaks.

🔔 HEADING INTO THE OPEN

  • Bird's-Eye: Futures are flat, SPY +0.06% and QQQ -0.09% after a session where the index hid a 2% drop in financials behind a chip rally. A market carried by one theme on each side is fragile, so size for a headline, not a trend, with Xi in town.

  • Ground Level: The AI-disruption basket is the trade to watch. Schwab, Allstate and Booking fell on fear, not results, and nothing in their numbers changed overnight. If they cannot bounce on a flat tape, the market is repricing their business models, and that selling usually lasts weeks, not days.

  • Under The Hood: The 2-year finally broke 4.76% and fell to 4.71%, the trigger we flagged Tuesday, yet utilities still closed red. Rate relief without a defensive bid says traders are shifting how they position, not buying safety. Today's 9:45 flash PMIs decide whether the 2-year keeps falling.
