⚡TODAY IN 10 SECONDS

Stocks rallied Friday after September added just 29,000 jobs, but the 10-year is back near 5.28%, and Schneider Electric's $22.6 billion bid for PTC has deal fever running this morning.

Our idea is Autodesk ($ADSK), PTC's closest rival, and the level to watch is 5.30% on the 10-year into Wednesday's Fed minutes.

FOCUS OF THE DAY

Secret #8: Never Stop Studying The Market

The textbook says a weak jobs report should pull bond yields down, and for a few hours Friday it did, with the 10-year dipping to about 5.18%. By Monday morning it was back near 5.28%. The lesson: the 2-year tracks the Fed, but the 10-year also prices inflation, government borrowing, and oil, and Brent is still above $100.

Traders who only learned "bad news means lower rates" bought rate-sensitive stocks Friday and are already underwater. Studying how each part of the market reacts, not just the headline, is what keeps you on the right side.

Find all 10 Secrets to Success at the bottom of today's issue.

📰 HEADLINES

  • Hiring stalls at 29,000 jobs. September payrolls missed the roughly 84,000 forecast, unemployment rose to 4.2%, and July was revised to a loss. Stocks rallied on hopes the Fed holds in October, with the S&P 500 finishing less than 1% from its record (CNBC, CNN, Yahoo Finance).

  • Schneider buys PTC for $22.6 billion. The French industrial giant will pay $205 a share in cash, a 42% premium, for the maker of product design and factory software. PTC is up about 35% to near $194.50, below the offer because the deal won't close until late 2027 (Axios, Bloomberg, GuruFocus).

  • C.H. Robinson buys RXO for $5.8 billion. RXO holders get $17.25 in cash plus 0.0856 C.H. Robinson shares, about $30.25 a share. RXO is up about 24%, and C.H. Robinson is down nearly 10%, the classic "buyer pays" reaction (Transport Topics, BNN Bloomberg, Axios).

  • Brazil rallies on a Bolsonaro lead. Senator Flavio Bolsonaro edged President Lula 47.0% to 45.2% in Sunday's first round, setting up an Oct. 25 runoff. The Brazil ETF ($EWZ) is up about 13%, and the real jumped more than 4% on bets for a pro-market government (Reuters, Bloomberg, Yahoo Finance).

  • The 10-year won't let go. The 10-year Treasury yield is back near 5.28% despite the soft jobs data, and Fed minutes land Wednesday at 2 PM. Prediction markets put an October hold near 82% (Yahoo Finance, Polymarket, Kalshi).

🎯 IDEA OF THE DAY

Scorekeeping. $PSX filled at Friday's $261.52 open, inside our $259 to $262 zone, dipped to $255.80 (stop $250 intact) and closed at $264.58, up about 1.6% from mid-entry. $TMO held its $648 stop by just $0.29. $OLLI still hasn't filled, and $CTSH stays a missed call.

Autodesk makes the software engineers and architects use to design buildings, cars, and factory parts, including AutoCAD, Revit, and Fusion. It sells mostly by subscription and is guided to about $2.13 billion in quarterly revenue.

When a buyer pays 42% over market for PTC, it tells Wall Street what design software is worth to a strategic buyer. Autodesk is PTC's closest public rival and closed Friday about 22% below its late-August high of $271.72, so the deal resets the yardstick for its value.

It is already up about 5% this morning, so the entry zone may not fill.

🔔 HEADING INTO THE OPEN

  • Bird's-Eye: Stocks and bonds disagree. Stocks priced a Fed pause Friday, but the 10-year climbing back toward 5.28% says inflation risk hasn't gone anywhere. Until yields roll over, favor companies with real cash flow over long-duration growth stories.

  • Ground Level: Monday is an M&A day: PTC, RXO, and Brazil's $NU and $PBR are the movers. Deal premiums lift peers fast, but the acquirer usually falls, as C.H. Robinson shows. Buy the sympathy names on a pullback, not the opening gap.

  • Under The Hood: ISM services printed at 10 AM; its prices-paid gauge matters more than the headline after factory prices hit 77.9. A hot prices reading pushes the 10-year toward 5.30% before Wednesday's minutes, so hold off adding rate-sensitive names until it's digested.
