⚡TODAY IN 10 SECONDS

Chips led Tuesday with the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index up 3.6%, the S&P 500 up 0.6%, and futures are mixed, with the 10-year at 4.99% and Brent near $115.

The Fed decides at 2:00 PM and Microsoft and Alphabet report tonight, so the idea is Hubbell ($HUBB), a data-center power supplier, sold 5.5% on a beat-and-raise.

FOCUS OF THE DAY

Secret #10: Think Like A Risk Manager

Wednesday stacks three binary events: the Fed decision at 2:00 PM, Chair Warsh’s press conference at 2:30 PM, and Microsoft and Alphabet after the close. A hold is priced above 90%, a December hike near 75%, and the 10-year at 4.99%, so his tone matters more than the rate.

Risk managers do not predict binaries; they size for them. Decide your maximum loss before 2:00 PM, shrink anything you cannot hold through a hawkish surprise, and remember stocks can fall on good news: Hubbell beat, raised, and still dropped 5.5%.

📰 HEADLINES

  • The Fed decides at 2:00 PM, and the press conference matters more. The funds rate is 3.75% to 4.00%, hold odds are about 93% on Polymarket and Kalshi, and a December hike is priced near 75%. Chair Kevin Warsh speaks at 2:30 PM, so his tone sets the 10-year, which closed at 4.995%.

  • A Houthi strike on a Saudi refinery pushes oil back above $115. The Houthis said they hit Saudi Arabia’s largest refinery, which processes 550,000 barrels a day, though Riyadh had not confirmed it. Brent rose about 1.5% to near $115.50 after falling nearly $2 Tuesday.

  • Vertiv soars while Boston Scientific and Enphase slide on outlooks. Vertiv jumped about 15% premarket on EPS of $2.21 versus $1.82 expected and a higher 2026 outlook. Boston Scientific raised its full-year EPS guide to $3.16-$3.18, and Enphase guided fourth-quarter revenue far below estimates.

  • Broadcom’s $63 billion financing puts Anthropic’s chip spending on bank balance sheets. A bank group will fund Broadcom chips and networking gear leased to Anthropic, and Broadcom rose 4% Tuesday as chips rallied. The deal ties AI demand to credit, not just cash flow.

  • SK Hynix posts a record quarter, and Korea’s Kospi jumps 6.6%. Operating profit hit KRW 83.33 trillion, up 632% from a year earlier, and the company plans about KRW 100 trillion of shareholder returns. Its U.S. shares are up about 7% premarket and Micron about 3%.

🎯 IDEA OF THE DAY

Hubbell makes electrical and utility products, from grid hardware to the connectors and enclosures inside data centers.

Vertiv is up about 15% on doubled orders, yet Hubbell fell 5.5% Tuesday on roughly triple its normal volume after beating and raising: adjusted EPS $5.91 (up 14%), sales up 25% to $1.87 billion, and 2026 adjusted EPS guidance lifted to $20.40 to $20.60.

Its Electrical segment grew 51% on data-center demand, and the stock sits 23% under its 52-week high, so you buy the sold beat in the second-order supplier instead of chasing Vertiv’s gap.

Sold beats can keep sliding; 13 points of Hubbell’s growth came from acquisitions, and the Fed and Microsoft can move it either way. Its next report is expected in late January or early February, so no earnings binary sits in the window.

🔔 HEADING INTO THE OPEN

  • Bird’s-Eye: Futures are mixed, with the S&P 500 up about 0.1%, the Nasdaq-100 up 0.4% and the Dow down 0.2%. The tape is waiting for 2:00 PM, so do not add risk before Warsh speaks at 2:30 PM. Let the 10-year pick a side of 5.00% before you lean either way.

  • Ground Level: Vertiv, GE Vernova and SK Hynix are gapping up on beats, while Boston Scientific, Enphase and NXP gap down on guidance. Gaps built on outlooks hold better than gaps built on one quarter, so favor the raises and do not catch the cuts. Wait 15 minutes and buy only what holds its opening low.

  • Under The Hood: The trade balance prints at 8:30, the Fed at 2:00, and Microsoft, Alphabet, ServiceNow, KLA, and Ford report after the close. Thursday brings GDP and PCE inflation at 8:30. Keep size small enough to survive a hawkish press conference and a hot PCE back-to-back.
